Leading child advocacy group cites damage of Council President’s racist, violent comments and colleagues’ complicity.

Los Angeles, CA –Special Needs Network demanded the immediate resignation of Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, Council Members Cedillo, and de León, and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera after released audio of a conversation included racist remarks and threats of violence toward a child.

“Given the overt anti-Blackness expressed in the audio, these four cannot be trusted or permitted to make decisions that impact our community,” said SNN Founder and President Areva Martin. “These so-called leaders have had a hand in policy and resource decisions that impact homelessness, policing, jobs, and every pressing issue confronting our Los Angeles. Their disdain for the Black community cannot be erased or apologized away.”

Special Needs Network also called for an investigation by California Attorney General Rob Bonta into the allocation of resources and policy decisions involving any of the three Council members who participated in the conversation.

“The shocking remarks have already had wide repercussions and the attitudes behind them suggest the potential for severely detrimental impacts on our children and families,” said Martin. “SNN will not stop speaking out or advocating for the political leadership our children deserve.”
